Welcome to Esca Wines!
“Esca," Italian for allurement, is an expression of winemaking and living that the husband-wife team of Mario and Anna Monticelli embrace. It’s not a stretch to say that everything in their lives revolves around food and wine.
In their day jobs they are winemakers for a couple of Napa Valley’s most storied families - Mario for Trinchero, Anna for Pina. In their spare time they make wine for themselves, their friends and their family.
So, welcome to their family and a line of wines they hope will entice you to enjoy the good life.
Mario and Anna were students at UC Davis, earning their degrees in viticulture and enology. Mario had a head-start in the wine business, born into a family whose roots as winemakers extend across four generations. His father immigrated here from Italy and has spent 35 years making wine for Gallo, introducing Mario to the family business when he was still a child.
Since graduation in 2000, Mario has worked a harvest in Tuscany for the renowned Antinori, apprenticed under Philippe Melka in Napa Valley and served as winemaker for Quixote Winery in the Stags Leap District before moving to Trinchero Napa Reserve in 2007.
Anna followed her graduation with a harvest in Bordeaux for the famed Chateau Cheval Blanc. She returned to Napa and worked as the assistant winemaker at Seavey Vineyard for two years, then spent four years as the assistant winemaker for cult cabernet producer Bryant Family Vineyard. She then moved to Pina Napa Valley where she has been the winemaker since 2007.
Mario and Anna believe life should be enjoyed on a daily basis, taking a seat around the midday table where good food and fine wine are elevated by great company and lively conversation. You might call it a more civilized approach. They do. That’s the philosophy that drives Esca, where Mario and Anna believe in the simplicity and rejuvenation of the good life.
Just like the nectar of the hibiscus flower attracts the bee on their label, they hope Esca wines entice wine lovers to embrace the good life.
